The Hikurangi Subduction Zone
East Coast Lab in partnership with GNS Science, commissioned Magpie to; write, develop and produce a short documentary, and create social media content to raise awareness of the heightened earthquake and tsunami risk for the Hikurangi Subduction Zone. Scientists from 16 countries studied Aotearoa-New Zealand’s largest and most active fault, the Hikurangi Subduction Zone, over a period of five years. The research team uncovered critical new knowledge, forecasting a 25% chance of a major event (M8 earthquake or greater) on that fault in the next 50 years. The research was led by GNS Science and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment Endeavour Fund. The public engagement project was sponsored by the Natural Hazards Commission – Toka Tū Are. The short documentary has been viewed over 1.7 million times on the 'Out There Learning' YouTube Channel alone.
